Popular Japanese Words in Calligraphy Experiences Calligraphy in Osaka
Did you know that the Japanese language consists of three writing systems: hiragana, katakana, and kanji? Each kanji character carries its own meaning, and by combining kanji with hiragana, we create words and sentences. Hiragana itself represents sounds rather than meanings.
In Japanese, the hiragana syllabary begins with "あいうえお" (a, i, u, e, o).
Interestingly, the very first two sounds, "あい" (ai), can also be written in kanji as 愛, which means "love". One of our past calligraphy students once remarked, "Japanese is such a beautiful language—because it begins with 'love'!" This was a wonderful realization that even we had never thought about before!
Now, here’s a ranking of the most popular words chosen during our calligraphy experiences:
幸 (Kō / Sachi) – Personal Happiness, Fortune, Blessing
福 (Fuku) – Prosperity, Well-being, Long-term Happiness
愛 (Ai) – Love, Affection, and Compassion
幸福 (Kōfuku) – A Symbol of Complete and Enduring Happiness
When the kanji 幸 (representing personal happiness, fortune, or blessings) is combined with 福 (symbolizing prosperity, well-being, and long-term good fortune), they form 幸福. This compound character expresses a more comprehensive idea of happiness—a state of complete fulfillment that blends momentary joy with enduring prosperity.
Don't you find it fascinating? When you make a reservation, we send you an email asking, "Do you know any Japanese words?" and "Is there a word you'd like to try writing?" Some guests research beforehand, while others discover the perfect word with us on the day of the experience. Since this is all about exploring and enjoying calligraphy, we never dictate what to write—it's completely up to you!
