A Day of Wishes for Girls - at GINSHO SHOIN Osaka
March 3rd is Hinamatsuri, often known as Girls’ Day in Japan.
It is a day to quietly wish for the healthy growth and happiness of girls.
Families display beautiful hina dolls representing the imperial court of the Heian period. At the top sit the Emperor and Empress, symbolizing harmony and balance. Below them are court ladies, musicians, ministers, and attendants — each playing a role in creating a peaceful and joyful world.
These dolls are not only decorative. Traditionally, they are believed to protect children and gently carry away misfortune.
Seasonal Traditions at Our Studio
At our studio, we are also displaying hina dolls throughout this month to welcome our guests.
The hina dolls we have at home were purchased when I was born — 50 years ago. Now, as an adult, I see them differently. The delicacy of their faces, the fine details of their kimono, and the quiet elegance of their presence feel even more beautiful to me. Perhaps because of that, I find myself wanting to sit and look at them for a long time.
If you visit us for a calligraphy experience, you will be able to see the dolls as well.
We hope you will enjoy not only writing with brush and ink, but also experiencing the quiet beauty of seasonal Japanese traditions.
We look forward to welcoming more guests this year, and hope that through these small cultural exchanges, people can experience a little bit of Japan’s heart and spirit.
Learning Together
On Saturdays, foreign children can also join lessons together with Japanese elementary and junior high school students. It becomes a natural space of cultural exchange through writing.
GINSHO SHOIN in Osaka also warmly welcome Japanese students for regular lessons. Inquiries in Japanese are, of course, very welcome.
If you feel curious, please contact us through the inquiry form.
We would be happy to hear from you.
